Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The season of Lent is now upon us. It is an opportune time to renew and deepen our relationship with Jesus and the people around us, renew the choices we make so that we might live as He taught. If we take seriously the Lenten program, it offers us the opportunity to renew our whole life.

The three traditions of Lent encourage us to step out of our comfort zones and approach them a little differently to take actions that enable us to have a deeper conversion within ourselves. These are:

Prayer—spending more time listening in prayer, not necessarily talking all the time. Being quiet in waiting for the answer to the question: “What is God trying to tell me?”

Fasting—not just from food or drink, but from the routines we all fall into that prevent us from living consciously. Fasting from the things that dull our awareness of God’s presence in our life at every moment, in every relationship, in every human encounter.

Almsgiving—more than the “2 rolls of pennies in the mite box” but rather spending time looking for, finding, and acting in a concrete way to reach out to the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized.

By prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, our spiritual life is nurtured, our personal life is purified, and our outreach to brothers and sisters on the margins is encouraged. It is an effective Lenten program leading us to a deeper personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

I wish you a blessed Lenten season. Keep safe always.

Sincerely, In Christ, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Al O. Abainza, SOLT,
